Enjoy a Well-Deserved Break with Carefree

About

Carefree is a multi-award-winning digital charity set up in 2017. Its mission is to offer every full-time unpaid carer in the UK the chance of an annual short break by partnering with the hospitality industry to donate its excess capacity, estimated at 1 million vacant hotel rooms per week.

Who is eligible?

Full-time (30+ hours per week) unpaid carers (18+) can gain access to our Breaks Hub by direct referral from North Tyneside Carers' Centre.

What carers need to know:

  • There is no charge for the accommodation, but there's a Β£33 admin fee covered by the carer directly at the point of making a booking request.
  • The break is for the carer only. Carers are welcome to take a companion but not the person(s) they care for.
  • Breaks typically consist of 1-2 nights plus breakfast for two.
  • Once a carer has been referred, they may book up to one break per year until they are no longer caring.

National Carer News

According to Age UK and Carer UK, thousands of older carers are missing out on pension credit and the carer add on. They say 65,000 older carers are not claiming them because the system is so complicated. Confused about benefits? Make an appointment or attend our Benefits drop-ins

Carers UK urges the government to strengthen the new Employment Rights law to support the 2.3 million working carers. They want Carers Leave to become a paid entitlement - right now carers can take 5 days leave but lose their wages.

The government wants to combine the work capability assessment and applying for the Personal Independence Payment into a single process to make it more straightforward for applicants.

The proposed welfare changes - the tightening of who is eligible to Personal Independence Payment and lower Universal Credit payments, are being widely discussed before June's parliamentary vote on the changes. There have been suggestions there might be transitional payments for those affected and more funding for disabled people to enter employment.

  Stronger Checks on Overpayments
Following widespread concern, the Department for Work and Pensions is now reviewing all Carer’s Allowance overpayment alertsβ€”a shift from the previous practice of checking only half. This aims to reduce the number of carers facing large, unexpected repayments
