September and October Newsletter

Support, updates and opportunities for unpaid carers in North Tyneside.

What’s New

WhatsApp Community Group

The recent carers training feedback survey highlighted that a number of carers were not aware of our training and information sessions and did not receive any information about them.

In response to this we will set up a WhatsApp Community Group for all carers to join.  This group will provide updates and announcements about our sessions and reach a wider audience.

Once this is set up you will receive a text message with instructions on how to join.

To protect user privacy, your phone number is only visible to community admins, people who have saved your number in their contacts, or those who have your number from your other chats.

Bite-Size Video Series for Carers

In the August newsletter we mentioned that we had been working with the SAGE Foundation to produce a series of short, bite-sized training and information videos for carers.

We are pleased to announce these are now live. Click here to check them out.

Hiding from dementia

One of our trustees who is also a dementia campaigner, Bill Wilson, has written about how he avoided his wife’s dementia diagnosis.

His advice: if you are consciously or unconsciously averse to getting a dementia diagnosis. Just get it.

Spotlight on ...

Angela Dodd,

Young Adult Carers Worker

Angela joined the Carers' Centre in June 2025 as the Young Adult Carers Worker.

Angela's role is to work with young adult carers (aged 16-25) and to offer them support in order for them to have a life outside of their caring role and be able to thrive.

This involves running a monthly group for young adult carers for peer support or just to have a nice time and a chat. Angela will also meet up with carers on a one to one basis to offer support such as signposting and referrals to specialist services, guidance and support to access education, employment and training opportunities.

If you are a young adult carer and need support please contact us on 0191 2496480, or email enquiries@ntcarers.co.uk

Support with employment and education

Carers can access free and specialist employment and educational support to help you balance work with your caring role.

We have partnered with Newcastle Carers and Carers Northumberland to deliver the Working for Carers project.

The project can help you to:

  • Find employment, training, education and volunteering opportunities

  • Understand your rights as a working carer

  • Build your confidence and skills

  • Write CVs, applications and support with interviews

Our friendly advisors offer one-to-one, free, non-judgemental and specialist advice to best help you.

Visit our website, or get in touch with us to find out more about the Working for Carers project.

This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the North East Combined Authority as the lead authority.

Benefits and financial wellbeing

Worried about making ends meet for you or the people you’re caring for?

As a carer, we know that your own worries aren’t always at the top of your list. But we also know that there are so many other things you’re worrying about too. Many of you have told us you’re struggling to make ends meet and pay bills on time.

That’s why we’re here – to help make money less of a worry.

We want to help you worry less about money, for you and the people you’re caring for.
We can help you to:

  • understand the benefits system which is confusing and complex and provide advice on accessing and applying for welfare benefits
  • understand the benefits that you and the person you care for might be entitled to
  • access and complete the forms that can be so daunting for the layperson
  • to reduce your energy bills and energy debt
  • get on the Priority Services Register with your supplier, which will help you get extra support with things like meter readings, advance warnings of supply interruptions and how to save on cooking and heating

Taking care of others means taking care of yourself. So, please get the help you need to help the people you care for.

Here's what a carer told us after receiving support from the team.

"I have recently been placed with Bernadette and we are working on A’s PIP re- consideration. I really appreciate the level of support we are receiving"

To access our benefits and financial wellbeing support, you’ll need to be registered with us.

To register, fill out our self referral form or if you need assistance please call us and we will help you complete it.
