Fire Safety Warning: Emollient Products

Emollient creams, used to treat skin conditions, can soak into clothing and bedding - posing a serious fire risk. Older adults, smokers and people with limited mobility are most at risk. The advice from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is

  • Don’t smoke or cook in contaminated clothing
  • Keep away from open fires or heaters
  • Washing doesn’t always remove the risk

National News Update

Carer's Allowance Update

The amount of money you can earn from a part-time job while also claiming Carer’s Allowance is rising to £196 per week from April 7.

x  The number of carers who have earned over the Carers Allowance wage limit and have to pay the Government back, has increased by 9,000 between May 2024 and February 2025, to 143,922. Carers UK have asked the Government for an immediate halt to new overpayment debts until the review of Carers Allowance concludes and its recommendations are implemented

Proposed Welfare Reforms: What Carers Need to Know

The Government’s Green Paper and Spring Statement in March set out proposed changes to disability and health benefits — changes that could significantly affect unpaid carers and those they support. Key proposals include:

  • Tighter eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), meaning fewer people will qualify when reapplying
  • Cuts to the Universal Credit (UC) health element for new claimants — reduced from £97 to £50 per week
  • Scrapping the Work Capability Assessment and replacing it with a new single health assessment linked to PIP
  • A minimum age of 22 proposed for access to UC health top-ups

These changes could result in 150,000 carers losing access to Carer’s Allowance and 370,000 disabled people losing PIP. Read Carers UK’s full response and a good summary in Community Carer magazine.

Worried about money? Our Benefits and Financial Wellbeing drop-ins this month could be your opportunity to access benefits or reduce your energy bills.
