New Year, new plans

As we begin 2025, it’s worth exploring ways to navigate the more frustrating and stressful aspects of our caring roles. This month, we’re launching a programme of 19 informative sessions designed specifically to help carers tackle challenges, manage feelings of overwhelm, and find practical solutions.

In addition to these sessions, we’re proud to introduce the new Dementia Carers Support Group, alongside our other support groups, offering opportunities for connection and relief from the isolation that can accompany caring responsibilities.

Whether you prefer group activities with fellow carers or more individual strategies, we hope you stay connected with the Centre in 2025.

The online booking system to attend an activity makes booking much quicker. You click on the link next to an activity and leave your name and email address on the booking form. That's it!

Remember you can still call 0191 2496480 or email enquiries@ntcarers.co.uk

Welcome back Gail!

Many of you will already know Gail Duxfield, who for many years was a Young Carer Family Support Worker at the Centre, helping young carers and their families. After a period away from the Centre when she took on a caring role, Gail has returned as an Adult Carer Wellbeing Worker.

In December Gail successfully completed a walking challenge to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research. You can still donate at: https://gofund.me/1da23fe4

Make your home warmer and cheaper to run

As January convinces us our homes are too cold and expensive to run, Home Energy North East (HENE) are offering telephone and home surveys to improve energy efficiency and check eligibility for energy-saving grants like double glazing or solar panels. This publically funded service will be perfect for carers who own their homes but live in a low income household.

They also focus on homes that are hard to insulate, such as flats, terraced houses, older properties, and rural homes. Call 0808 175 9345 or visit energyadvicenortheast.co.uk. They also have an online assessment tool, Homewise, for personalised quick tips.

Cheaper travel options for carers in 2025

Great news, the expected January bus fare increase has been reduced in our area, with fares rising only from £2 to £2.50 per journey.

For those who rely on taxis, the TaxiCard scheme in Tyne and Wear offers eligible individuals (on higher rates of PIP, Attendence Allowance or registered blind) vouchers worth £225 annually, covering the first £3 of journeys with approved taxi companies.

Carers get free Flu Vaccine

If you’re an unpaid carer in the UK, you’re entitled to a free flu vaccine this winter until March.

The flu can be serious, especially for vulnerable people, and getting vaccinated helps protect both you and those you care for.

You can get the vaccine for free if you’re registered with your GP surgery as an unpaid carer. Just let them know when you book. Sadly, unpaid carers are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine this winter unless you’re in another priority group.

Free online courses for Carers

Did you know that carers and former carers can access free online courses through the WEA? These courses cover a range of topics, from "Beginners Spanish" and "Relaxation for Wellbeing" to "Art Appreciation" and more.

Unlike most adult courses, which carers often have to pay for due to funding cuts, WEA offers a fantastic opportunity to learn and connect without the financial burden. You don’t need to be receiving a carer’s allowance to qualify as an unpaid carer. If you're unsure about eligibility, call their learner services team at 0300 303 3464 for guidance. Check their webiste here.

Survey highlights crisis facing local carer services

The Carers Trust’s latest survey of 130 local unpaid carer organisations reveals a growing crisis. From April 2023 to March 2024, demand for carer services increased by 4%, but the resources to deliver those services fell by 3%, leaving more carers unsupported. Key findings include:

  • 13% real-term cuts in contract values since 2021/22.
  • Only £91 statutory funding per carer annually.
  • 50% of contracts cut or stagnant in 2023/24.
  • 80% of services report growing unmet needs for carers.

The report says these pressures could result in the permanent loss of many existing support services for carers. Read the report here.
