January Catch-Up

A Happy New Year to you from everyone at the Carers' Centre. We have news about more rights for carers as well as info on our carer support groups. Maybe the start of a new year is the time to try out one of the groups and see if it might be the help you need in 2024.

We will be back in touch later this month with news about our upcoming information and training sessions covering a variety of subjects important to carers. We will also be sharing news about the beginner's art group.

Please feel free to reach out to us at 0191 249 6480 or email us at enquiries@ntcarers.co.uk.

New Rights for Carers

It is lovely to start the new year with some good news; it has been announced that the Carer’s Leave Act 2023 becomes law on the 6th of April 2024!

The Carer’s Leave Act gives unpaid carers the legal right to take up to their equivalent working week in unpaid leave from work each year to support their caring responsibilities. Up until now, carers have only been able to take time off for emergencies. The new law means carers can take time away from work for things like hospital appointments or meetings with social workers.

Carers can get an overview of their rights at work here: https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/work-and-career/your-rights-in-work/taking-time-off-when-needed/

This winter there will be more than 40 warm spaces open to all people in North Tyneside. Many include access to free hot drinks, wifi, computers, libraries, activities like bingo, crafts, cookery lessons, and toddler groups. They will be offering everything from soup and low-cost meals through to social activities like board games, group walks, and film showings.

A printable list of all venues, opening times, and activities can be found here.

More details about financial support available for North Tyneside’s residents during the cost-of-living crisis can be found here.

Time4Calm

I am so much more positive and have a far greater understanding of myself. It has been an invaluable and tremendously healing experience.”

“The group experience has been so uplifting, it has been wonderful to be part of it. It has been an incredible empowering experience in every session. It is hard to put into words how much this course has helped me.”

Mental Health Carers experienced  the new Time4calm sessions in December.

The 6-week gentle mindful listening and meditation course uses mindful life stories to explore what it means to be happy. The course offered practical tools to support carers in becoming happier within your own life. There was a lot of positive feedback about the course, as you can see in the quotes above.

Mental Health Carers can also access the monthly Mental Health Carer Support Group that meets every month. The next group is on Thursday 25th January, see the groups section below for details.
