Welcome to our Carers Week Special Edition
Starting Monday 9 June, we’re taking time to recognise and celebrate the vital role of family and friend carers. Among the week’s highlights is the Carers Conference on Wednesday 11 June – a brilliant opportunity to connect with other carers. 

As always, you’ll find all the regular groups, activities, and updates included in our monthly newsletter.

9 – 15 June | Caring About Equality

This Carers Week, we’re shining a light on the theme of equality in caring. Many carers face financial strain and unequal access to services. The message is clear: you don’t have to do it alone. We’ve planned a week of inspiring, supportive, and fun events to celebrate and support carers across North Tyneside. Mark your calendar and book your place.

     

Monday 9 June

Carers Wellbeing Drop-Ins

Start the week by connecting with people who understand what you do.
Come along to our friendly drop-in sessions and speak to professionals from the Carer Wellbeing Team and North Tyneside Council social workers. Whether you need advice or just a chat, we’re here to support you.

DIY Banner Workshop

Unleash your creativity and learn about the rich tradition of banner making as a form of expression and pride. You’ll take home a banner you’ve made yourself!

Carers Conference

This is the highlight of the week – a full day of informative talks, wellbeing sessions and workshops all designed around your needs as a carer. The conference is also a chance to engage with fellow carers and workers from numerous local and national organisations supporting carers.

All Carers Support Group

Tuesday 17 June, 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm at Longsands beach, opposite The Grand Hotel, Tynemouth

Due to Carers Week, the group meets on Tuesday 17 June (not 10 June as previously advertised) on the slope next to Longsands beach, opposite The Grand Hotel, for a leisurely beach walk.concluding with a relaxing cuppa at Crusoe’s.

Young Adult Carer Group

5.00 pm to 7.00 pm, Tuesday 17 June at Shiremoor Family Hub (next to the Metro station). Caring for a loved one as a young adult can feel isolating—but you’re not alone. This monthly group offers a relaxed, supportive space where you can connect with others aged 18 to 25 who understand what it's like.

Mental Health Carer Walk and Talk Group at the Laing Art Gallery 

Thursday, 26 June, 1.45 pm to 4.00 pm at The Laing Art Gallery, central Newcastle.

Join the group at the Laing Art Gallery where Art Historian Sophie Mitchell will tell us about the gallery and revealssome amazing pieces of local art. We have a private space booked out with teas and coffees provided. Meet at 1.45 in the gift shop reception.

Carer Woodland Well-Being Activity 

📅 Wednesday 4 June, 

🕙 9.00 am to 4.30 pm

📍Wallsend Aldi/Forum car park 


Join us for a rejuvenating day outdoors at our Woodland Well-being session, expertly facilitated by WinG Outdoor Activities. 


The day includes bushcraft skills, using tools like saws and knives, cooking over an open fire, and hopefully unwinding in the hammocks. Essential safety gear, cooking equipment, extra drinking water, and a portable chemical toilet will be provided on the site. Participants should bring their own food and drink, such as sausages, burgers, or vegetables, to cook over the fire, or opt for a packed lunch.


*Please note, due to the natural terrain and limited facilities, this activity is not suitable for individuals with mobility difficulties.*

Come along to the North Shields 800 Community Day, a celebration of the area’s rich history, heritage, and culture. It’s a fantastic day out for all ages with exhibitions, activities, and local organisations coming together under one roof.


Visit the North Tyneside Carers’ Centre stall to meet the team, find out about support for unpaid carers, and take away helpful information and resources. Whether you're a carer yourself or just want to learn more, we’d love to see you!

DiscoverMe Launches New Support for Young People

The DiscoverMe project is designed to support young people who may need a little extra help building confidence and connection. DiscoverMe offers a welcoming space where young people can find a sense of belonging and a growing sense of purpose. 


New timetable launches Monday 9 June
Sessions will run for six weeks, and young people can choose to attend one session or as many as they like. The Game Masters D & D sessions are now fully booked
Once registered, a team member will be in touch to help book sessions and complete the sign-up process.

💡 £22.6 Million Investment in Innovative Support

The UK government has announced an investment of £22.6 million to support unpaid carers through innovative projects. They aim to introduce technologies like remote monitoring systems, allowing carers more flexibility and much-needed breaks. Other initiatives include digitizing carers’ assessments and establishing support services in hospitals to better identify and assist carers.

The Carers Trust criticised tougher immigration rules that make it harder to recruit overseas care workers. They warn this will increase pressure on unpaid carers already filling gaps in an overstretched system.
